If you need help configuring a distribution, software, hardware, etc....please follow these guidelines.

This is a basic overview of what you should include in a help request post. The information below is only a guideline to help you. A simply request for help with a problem description is all that is really needed, but to get an accurate answer quickly, it helps to know the information so we don't have to ask repeated questions to solve your problem.

Basically, you should at least include:

For Hardware Help
* output of lspci to show hardware
* output of lsusb to show usb hardware information
* output of dmesg
* any error messages
* complete description of problem
* amount of memory
* hard drive size
* hdparm settings (hdparm -i /dev/hdx where x is your hard drive, cdrom, etc)
* hdparm timing settings (hdpamr -tT /dev/hdx where x is same as line above)
* output of lshw (see below for link)
* hardware brand, model, and release version

For Software Help:
* specific configuration files related to that software
* xorg.conf or XFree86
* /etc/fstab
* network configuration files
* alsa configuration files
* output of packages installed (rpm, emerge, etc)
* hdparm settings (hdparm -i /dev/hdx where x is your hard drive, cdrom, etc)
* hdparm timing settings (hdpamr -tT /dev/hdx where x is same as line above)
* screenshot of your desktop/software with problem
* amount of memory
* hard drive size
* grub.conf or lilo.conf
* output of your /usr/src/linux/.config or zcat /proc/config.gz for kernel information
* your make.conf if using a "compiled from source distro"
* distribution and version used
* software version with problem
* complete description of problem

For Boot Problems:
* copy of grub.conf or lilo.conf
* complete description of problem
* distribution and version used
* copy of /etc/fstab and /etc/mtab

I will add more as I think of things.......

You could also install (if not already) and use lshw - http://ezix.sourceforge.net/software/lshw.html - which shows very detailed hardware specs, for an example, see this link - http://www.edwiget.name/content/view/12/26/

If anyone has any additional suggestions for what to include, please post your suggestion and I will add it.
