I like to play around with new development. I have been running sabayon beta 4 for a few days now. Here is how to go from sabayon 3.5 or 3.5.1 to sabayon 4 beta.

Open the file /etc/entropy/repositories.conf

Find the line that says:

Branch|3.5

Change it to

Branch|4

Backup all of your configuration files in case something screws up really bad:

# cd /

# tar czfvp etc-3.5.tar.gz etc

Copy your xorg.conf file to your root folder or you will have troubles later:

# cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /root/

Next, update equo (from a console or shell):

# equo update

Next, check for world updates (you might want to be sitting down as there were about 988 files to download on mine):

# equo world -pretend

If you like what you see, update to world:

# equo world

This will install all of the beta 4 files. But, you won't be done just yet. There won't be a xorg.conf file which is needed to start a graphical display. Copy the previous xorg.conf back to the correct location:

# cp /root/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf

You can now either reboot the system or simply restart X using ctrl - alt - backspace command.

Some Problems:

Since you are working with the bleeding edge development version, you will have some troubles. One I can tell you right now is that sabayon 4 beta comes with flash 10. On my AMD64 installation, firefox often crashes whenever some flash animations or movies are displayed. I don't have a work around. You could manually install flash 9.x to fix this.

I don't like the new kde login screen, so I switched to gdm which is really sweet. If you want to do this, simply edit the file /etc/conf.d/xdm and change the display manager line from kdm to gdm.

Overall:

The beta 4 system is really responsive on my system, compared to a fully up to date 3.5.1 it is considerably faster. If I find any other bugs or crashes while using the new beta 4, I will update them here along with fixes If I have one.

Finally:

Don't complain to sabayon developers if your system doesn't work or there are bugs. You are in fact using a beta release so this should be expected. If you find a bug though, report it but don't expect a response or fix. You can also post a message here and maybe I could help you.

If you dont like the new system, change the repositories.conf line back to the original.  Update equo and update world.  Extract your backed up etc directory.  Restart

well, if you are a kde user and you use konqueror for file management, you maybe should hold off on this upgrade.

Konqueror 3.5.x won't work and gives this error "konqueror: symbol lookup error: /usr/kde/3.5/lib64/libkdeinit_konqueror.so: undefined symbol: stat64"
