While in college, I have had to use windows more than I have had to use it in the last 10 years. I hate windows. However, I wrote an article on how to run Linux inside of windows for those of you who would like to do so using cygwin, or vmware, or another virtual machine manager.

There is also a collection of OSS software available as an ISO download or via bittorrent. This collection of software is entirely free, contains many of the Linux applications I need and use daily, and almost makes windows feel at home (if it wasn't for the constant reboots, security risks, annoying and bothersome messages/reboots when it wants to, etc).

Here are the details:

Free download available from: http://www.winosscdrom.com or http://www.rlhc.net/blog/?page_id=71

For those who are bandwidth challenged, also available for $3.00 shipped to your address.

I built this CDRom with the following rules in mind: the software had to be free and open source and also had to run on both Windows and Linux. You Apple fans will be happy to know that _some_ of the software titles are also available on the Mac, but not on this CD.

Please use Bittorrent if possible and seeders are always welcome.

You can find the 1.5 bittorrent file at http://ftp.rlhc.net/downloads/winosscdrom-v1.5.iso.torrent

Thanks very much to the guys at www.gnulinuxcentar.org and linux.kiev.au for hosting the ISO for me.

The CDRom has an autorun function which loads an index.html file. Nothing fancy, but it does the job. I have links to the packages on the disk from the index.html file to make installing a little easier.
