I just received the Linksys WRT54GL router that I ordered last week.  The model number signifies the WRT54G series wireless broadband router, the L signifies Linux operating system.

The old versions of the WRT54G series and some of the WRT54GS series routers had Linux installed on them.  Many people found ways to modify them and extend their capabilities way past what Cisco originally included.  It became so popular, that Cisco decided to offer a model specific to these hackers, hence, the birth of the GL model.  You can't get these locally, but you can order them online.

Newegg.com is where I got mine from, for the simple fact they were actually cheaper than my own distributor due to FREE SHIPPING.  It is also one of the hottest selling items, with over 850 positive reviews.  It is probably also the only hardware device that has a perfect score

If you have been to my personal web page lately, you will see why I wanted one of these.  The nice thing about this router is that it can be customized with many 3rd party firmwares that extend this router.  It has been said by many that you can turn this $60 wireless router into a $1,000 wireless router using these 3rd party firmwares.  I actually bought one of these in order to do an experiment of my own for something I have been working on for many years (hint RHPSecure)

If you want to check the progress and experiments I am making with this, check out http://www.edwiget.name  I will probably have an upcoming article at the MLUG website and/or a presentation at one of the MLUG meetings in the near future.

The wrt54gl bit the dust last night in the thunderstorm.  I couldn't wait on a new one to come in....however, it is already ordered.  While I wait on it, I bought a wrt150n from walmarts...which also accepts 3rd party firmwares.  It just can't be hacked like the wrt54g series.

Just my luck, I got a bad wrt150n router from walmarts.  I had to take it back and exchange it for another one.  It lasted about 2 hours then started doing a continuous reboot.  It was very hot and it was even making a sizzling sound.

On another note, I called linksys support about the wrt54gl and found out it is under warranty until 2010.  So, I am getting another one for free.  They never asked me if it had been modded.  I am going to send it back and see what happens.
