I need help here.
I have an old IBM T22 laptop, and tried to install Debian 4 on it. Now Debian 3.x (Sarge) installed with very little problems, but tried 4 and it froze as it was installing, and always at the exact same spot.
I saw it using something like 'tasksel' before the red install bar started
The screen says:
Select and install Software
Then it hits 5%, then freezes... The first time it ran about 3 hours, without a moment.
This is after it partitions the harddrive, checks on-line registries, and such. Oh! Also installs the base system.
Would it help if I provided a screen shot? I can get one from the digital camera.
Now what's irritating also is I'm out $25 for a set of disks. I don't want to keep buying new disks, until this is fixed. So what do I do here? Is there a way to fix this, then keep testing on my equipment until it works THEN buy the fully updated DVDs?
I like Debian, but I suspected I'd have problems with D4 since it's still offically in unstable mode. Should I just get Sarge until they offically release the stable version? (I wanted to start in etch, so I can use Open office 2.x, and use the new sata drives of my main system. - I guess I'm pushing the envelope here.)
Any help would be appreciated.

sounds like to me it is possibly an irq or ioport conflict.
Do you have the ability to set custom kernel parameters when booting? If so, try these in order:
pci=nomsi
pci=useqirqpmask
pci-routeirq
These are normally passed as boot-time options to the kernel.
Edited to include: Before I would do anything, check the md5 of the published iso file against the one of the burned cd. Make sure you burn the cd at the slowest possible speed. I recently had an issue with my brand new laptop that I had burned a Sabayon Linux release to DVD that did some pretty weird things. I had burned the dvd at 8speed. It ended up being a bad burn that caused it to lock up about 1/2 way through the install. 4 days later, I was laughing about it cause I usually always check the published vs burned disk md5sums to make sure they are correct. This goes for published / purchased cds too - you can get a bad disk

Ok Ed. Tried everything you suggested, nothing. I thought at first once it hits that spot (5%) it froze the entire system to the point only a cold reboot will fix it. But ctrl-alt-del did reboot the system.
I tried 'install DEBCONF_DEBUG=5' suggested by Debian, but that didn't give me anything different. Unless it's got to be done in the expert mode.
Is there someway of getting ahold of a debug log even if I do a CAD restart? If so, maybe I can send that to you.
It says that I can do several things, including an expert install. (I'm guessing a no GUI install) but I haven't tried that. I think you'll be familiar with the installer of debian. It's the standard one that I remember from Sarge.

hmmm, the ctrl+alt+f12 didn't work to get a diagnostic console? You would probably need to do it before it freezes.
One other options is to call me when you get a chance and some free time, maybe I can take a look at it? I would download it and try here but everything I have is now 64bit hardware.
I went head and tried another install, no go. Can't get a ctrl-alt-f12 to work in the GUI mode. So you're probably going to have to take a look. I'll be running down to Mayslick tomarrow with the boss-lady about 12p, where can you meet us to drop it off? Anywhere on the hill? Downtown?
I'll just give you the laptop, and the disks.
I've been looking around the web for Openoffice 2.x, and Debian sarge combo, no luck yet. that's the only reason I want etch, is for OO2, and some have said the same.
if I can get an OO2 package for sarge, I'll just stick with Sarge until v4 is out and works with the laptop, and desktop.
Thanks for the help.
