The next scheduled MLUG meeting is Saturday, September 2, 2006 at the Maysville Community & Technical College room T114 (same as last meeting). The meeting begins at 12:00 (noon).
Originally this date was planned for an InstallFest, however, the installfest has been postponed until the January meeting (I didn't want to take a chance with a low turn-out since the September meeting was on labor day weekend and this is the first time we have had a meeting on a holiday weekend. However, most of the people I talked to said they didn't even know there was a holiday in september, so it was just another day for them)
I am also requesting topics to be discussed. If there is anything in particular you would like discussed (software, hardware, distributions, etc) - please post details to this thread.
Meetings are open to the general public. MLUG members are encouraged to help us spread the word about the meetings, bring a friend or two. As always, I will have free Linux software available and usually have refreshments.
Turn off of US68 to enter the college campus. At the stop sign, turn left. Park in parking lot C. Enter the main entrance and walk straight down the hallway. Room T114 is on the right just a few doors down the hall.

Per request - Migrating from Windows to Linux (will cover the Linux equivalents of common applications used on Windows)
Per request: using apt, synaptic, yum, aptitude, rpm, and dpkg for package/software management, i.e. installing new software, removing software, upgrading software, checking status of software.
Will also show you how to make your own package files from source (making debian deb file is finished and I hope to have redhat rpm done by meeting date)

also, new for this meeting...first time ever, we will have some raffle items to help raise money for the MLUG. Tickets are $5 each
Items to be raffled include:
Xandros 4 Premium Boxed Set (paid for and donated by Ed Wiget) - value / retail price $79.99 - list of features below. Can be installed on as many computers as you own (unlike that other operating system which requires you to buy a license for each computer)
4 Ubuntu T-shirts (Donated by Canical Ltd - makers of Ubuntu for this raffle)
Everyone who attends also gets a free ubuntu sticker. I also have the new ubuntu dapper cd's for pc's, amd64, and apple/mac which are always free.
Features of Xandros 4 Premium Desktop includes:
Those of you who were at the last meeting, got a glimpse at the beta version of Xandros which I was involved in beta testing through its initial development and rollout. This was the first time I had ever used Xandros. Xandros is know for making life very easy to those migrating from Windows to Linux. I can attest to that for sure. Below you will find the main features for this release. However, I want to add a few things. I have chosen Xandros to be the "Linux version of choice" on all desktop workstations installed with the Maysville Business Linux Initiative. Why? Its very simple to install, works right out of the box with almost all hardware, uses only stable packages (no bleeding edge) that have had ample time for all bugs to be squashed, and includes some of the best and innovative features I have ever seen on ANY linux distribution. The features make it simple for even a novice linux user to complete very advanced tasks in linux by simple point and click. Such as, configure and enable a firewall using a point and click interface with the ability to specify inbound traffic allowed, and outbound traffic allowed on a per-interface or per-network basis - great for those who use laptops or are moving computers around from a public network to private or vice-versa. The security suite works almost like the one in Win%ows XP - it has firewall, anti-virus, etc build right in - great for those who use xandros on windows networks with filesharing across both platforms. It includes two commercial applications that makes syncing settings from your windows desktop to linux desktop simple - the ability to import mail, address books, etc. It also includes crossover office that makes those must-have windows applications simple to install - even easier to install under xandros than they are in Windows. File and printer sharing is a breeze to set up and maintain for multiple lans/wans/offices/places, etc. I could continue to go on and on and on but fact remains, for half the cost of Windows.....you get a much better operating system with over 18,000 available free software packages with a look and feel much like windows, except its easier to use, not prone to crashing, and easier to maintain. -- By Ed Wiget on August 14, 2006
Xandros Network Connection System
The Xandros Connection System helps users manage network connections and includes improved wireless support. The system enables users to store network profiles (included wireless encryption keys), and facilitates smoother transitioning from one network connection to another.
Improved Notebook Power Management
Maximize the charge of your laptop battery by better optimizing performance of the system when unplugged.
30 Minutes of SkypeOut Calling Minutes
Call anyone, anywhere for free.
Updated Applications
Home Edition - Premium includes updated versions of OpenOffice.org, Thunderbird, Firefox, stock ticker, weather applet, and more..
Integrated Security Suite
The Xandros Security Suite includes the Xandros Firewall, Anti-Virus, Xandros Networks Updates, and a rootkit checker (spyware). This centralized interface provides a high level view of your computer’s overall security vulnerability levels, as well as access to configure any of the four applications inside.
Xandros Storage Manager
This tool is for installing and configuration of hard disks. It allows you to reallocate space between partitions.
Xandros Photo Manager
Tool for importing photos from digital cameras (or the Web). Users can edit photos, and organize photos into albums.
Music Management
This suite of features includes the following elements
Music Application This program allows you to organize music into playlists, and listen to music from CDs, MP3s and the Web. It can also sync music to iPods and other MP3 players.
iPod Compatibility You can sync music between Xandros Desktop and iPod
MP3 Encoding Using the drag-and-drop capabilities of the Xandros File Manager, users can convert wav files (CD format) to MP3 by just dragging and dropping them onto their desktops.
NTFS Read and Write
While Xandros has always supported dual-booting on the same PC as Windows, until now you could only read from a Windows NTFS partition. Now, you can both read and write to their NTFS partition from Xandros.
Versora Progression Desktop for Xandros
Versora provides migration tools for you to import e-mail, calendars, address books, bookmarks, files, and other important setting from their Windows machine to Xandros.
New Version of CodeWeavers CrossOver Office
Updated for improved compatibility with more Windows applications. See www.codeweavers.com for more information. Allows you to run all popular windows applications in Linux without running a virtual machine such as vmware, win4lin, qemu, or others. Crossover Office has a very easy to use point and click to install windows applications interface and makes installing windows applications on linux easier than installing them on windows!!!

Wow, not much of a turn-out for todays meeting considering the terrible weather, however, I do realize this is considered a holiday weekend. Hopefully that is the reason for the low turn-out.
We had 5 people in attendance (1 of which couldn't stay, 3 regulars, and 1 new face -- welcome to the MLUG!!!!).
Ubuntu donated 4 t-shirts - so everyone who stayed for the meeting got one - you snooze you lose!! (by the way, the person who had to leave had a very good reason. I wont single that person out or the reasons why they had to leave and I hope you don't take my comment the wrong way as it is only intended to mean that you never know when I have free merchandise besides cd's....so for all the other regulars who missed the meeting -- and the new people who missed too -- had you been at this meeting, you may have gotten a free t-shirt too)
The presentation files are in the downloads section.
Here are the topics that were covered:
Introduction
Windows to Linux Application Comparisons
Why I personally hate windows (or more appropriately why your computer technician doesn't want you using Linux, or why your IT staff doesn't want to use Linux in your business)
We took a break to watch An Elephants Dream - the first open source movie, free to download, free to watch, free to modify with the blender files released under the Creative Commons license
Software / Package Management using apt, rpm, portage and their gui front-ends along with compiling from source code.
How to create your own deb files from source code for debian-like distributions
How to create your own rpm files from source code for redhat-like distributions
How to get linux help
Next meeting is the first saturday of December.....better be there, you never know what you might miss. Oh, by the way, this will be an InstallFest...so bring your computers, monitors, keyboards, and mice and let professionals install linux for you - dual boot with your existing windows or wipe out windows entirely....its your choice.
