We had 8 people in attendance, plus me, but only 3 were regular attendees. A few of the members who normally attend were not present, which is understandable because everybody has better things to do on a nice saturday afternoon.
The meeting lasted from 12 - 5PM (way past the time it was scheduled) and I am sorry for keeping everyone over so late on a nice day.
I had way too much material to present at the meeting and barely got through the first 1/3 of the presentation in 5 hours. Many off track topics were discussed, some of it due to the material being presented and some of it due to my lack of sleep and unable to keep focused.
The material that was presented included the Howto for What is Linux, the Howto for Linux User Groups, and the 2006 Maysville Linux User Group goals. The material not discussed was Creating a Firewall using fwbuilder, and a Custom LAMP (Linux Apache, MySQL, PHP, phpmyadmin, SSL, mod_security) installation from source code.
I will add the material as individual articles on this web site within a day or two and also make them available as downloads.
Everyone at the meeting was aware of the recent problems I had with my laptop. Those not aware can either have a look here for the first part of the problem. This was further enhanced by the night before the presentation that the hard drive started going out. I made a complete backup of the presentation material the morning of the presentation and stayed up all night to revive it in hopes it would at least make it another 24 hours without failing.
After the meeting, me and my girlfriend and daughter went to get a bite to eat at one of the local chinese restaurants. When I returned home and plugged the laptop in to upload the unfinished topics from the presentation to this web site, I was faced with this message:
hard drive 0 failed, please insert floppy disk to continue.
Let me explain something about Linux - had I rebooted the laptop during the presentation, the presentation would have been over right then because the hard drive was already failed. I have stressed this many times to people using Linux - Linux will only fail to startup after a hardware failure when you reboot. A failure for linux to restart after a reboot is a SURE SIGN OF HARDWARE FAILURE. If the hard drive fails while Linux is running, for the most part it will continue to work running from memory. Thats what saved the presentation I gave, it was loaded into memory even though the hard drive finally died during the presentation.
Give me a day or two to get the material uploaded to the server from the presentation.
Those ubuntu CD's that everyone got are a life saver to me right now, because that is how I am working now. I pulled the hard drive out of the laptop and stuck in the ubuntu bootable live cd...and with a memory stick I can now continue to work until I get a new system.
Thanks for everyone who attended.
The next meeting is scheduled for June 03, 2006. It was determined we would have quarterly meetings on the first saturday of the month at the same time and location.
An individual thank you goes out to the sponsors (direct or indirect) of this meeting:
Maysville Community & Technical College - Providing a place to meet and resources for the meeting
Ubuntu Linux - Installation & Live CD's
Roaring Penguin - CanIT Anti-Spam Solution 50 User License
