Hey folks: I want to upgrade to Debian 5.2 on my Asus Eee. However, I don't have an external CDR drive (nor do I want to buy one for just once a year or so use.)
So I'm wondering. Can you install linux, if the install CD is copied to the system's harddrive? I'm thinking I can put Debian 5's install CD on a 1g flash drive, copy it to the Asus's harddrive (Maybe in a 1g partition) then boot up somehow (maybe from a bootable flash drive) then install Debian that way.

does it have an option to boot from ethernet in the bios? If so, you could do a "net install" of debian.
Another option would be to boot to a usb thumb drive containing backtrack linux for usb (or any other bootable usb linux).
Then you will have linux tools in a working home directory. You could then fdisk the drive, mount a remote filesystem containing an installed debian and following the steps here:

I did not use the Backtrack Installation script. The reason was because you can install pretty much any live cd or dvd or filesystem using the steps below, which to me is much faster.
First, make sure your partitions are mounted correctly by using the mount command: # mount
I then installed Backtrack Security manually to partition /dev/sda5 using these three simple commands:
