I wanted to start this thread because I have begun working on the topic. Before I get too far along in writing the articles, let me know what you want to see....or software suggestions.

I have currently finished the Intro and began work on the digiKam article.

Introduction - Part 1 - http://www.maysville-linux-users-group.org/article138.html

I am already running into a problem writing these reviews on Linux software due to the newness of the Canon XSi / 450D camera. The problem seems to be well documented on all operating systems including Windows, Linux, and Mac.

Importing raw CR2 images in some post-processing software renders the image with pink tones. This is caused by the Digic III processor that is new to the 450D. The post-processing software needs updated to support the 450D.

Here are a few threads with discussions regarding this:

Oddly enough, the commercial software doesn't seem to suffer these problems....only some of the free open-source software (at least the versions I currently have installed).

The newest version of raw therapee v2.3, digikam (pink cast), blueMarine (dark blue cast)

Digikam Quick Fix

A quick fix for digikam (that will work until a newer version of libkdcraw comes out) is to link kdcraw to dcraw.  On my system, it was simply moving /usr/lib64/libkdcraw3/kdcraw to /usr/lib64/libkdcraw3/kdcraw.bak and then ln -s  /usr/bin/dcraw /usr/lib64/libkdcraw3/kdcraw

Here are the actual commands:

Code:

# mv  /usr/lib64/libkdcraw3/kdcraw  /usr/lib64/libkdcraw3/kdcraw.bak
# ln -s  /usr/bin/dcraw /usr/lib64/libkdcraw3/kdcraw

software affected is any software that relies on dcraw less than version 8.86 including libkdcraw less than 0.14 and ufraw (which opens up kipi-plugins and digikam)

Software not affected, currently includes current versions of:

lightzone, bibble, f-spot (possibly others)

I posted a bug report / feature request on gentoo and also on upstream libkdcraw (what can I say, I love digikam because it is what I am most familiar to using).

Slight delay in June Ultimate Linux Guide to Digital Photography article ...several setbacks

I am working on several articles at once and the article I had planned on publishing June 1 is not completed (I have been busy taking thousands of pictures and playing with software).

At any rate, I have five major articles in the works right now with more being planned.  They are:  Workflow Terms, bibble pro (commercial), digikam, f-spot, blueMarine.
