Several questions have already been sent to me via email by a few people, so I thought I had better start a FAQ thread to answer them.

I will update this thread with other questions and answers as they are received. Also, check the specific course threads for FAQs specific to those courses.

FAQ #1
Q - You have been talking about offering distance learning for several months. How soon will this be available?

A - It takes a considerable amount of time to start a course from scratch and then build it into a complete course, test it, and make sure the information is up to date with the current versions of software used for the courses. I expect to be able to open the first three courses sometime near the first of the year (2006)

FAQ #2
Q - will there be a charge for taking these courses? If so, how much?

A - These courses will be free of charge except for the cost of any books needed to take the courses. I am not looking to profit from these courses, but will incur some small expenses for things such as the certificates. There will be numerous free courses offered, but some will require books. Students who wish to purchase the books by other means can have the registration fees waived.

FAQ #3
Q - how much time will I have to complete a course?

A - You can take as much time as you wish due to the way these courses are structured - work at your own pace in your own time. Of course, I can offer courses with time limits for businesses who wish to enroll multiple employees for the same course (this means that custom courses are available and even on-site training)

FAQ #4
Q - are you a certified teacher?

A - No. I simply have a love of teaching others how to do things. I have experience teaching for the MLUG, the Maysville Community & Technical College, KCTCS. I have also given numerous presentations for the MLUG, Maysville Community & Technical College, KCTCS, along with other Linux Users Groups. I have provided detailed online and on-site technical support to both businesses and residential customers so that they are aware of who caused their problem, how their problem started, why I am fixing their problem, what they can do to not allow this same problem to repeat in the future, etc.,

FAQ #5
Q - Will there be certification for these courses?

A - you will receive a certificate of completion for the courses you take and actually pass, although the MLUG Distance Learning is not currently a certified testing center or certified teaching facility, such as a college or other school. However, these courses will use the highest standards of teaching available and students who fail the course or do not complete the course will simply not pass the course. Those who do complete the courses will definately have obtained knowledge in the courses taken that can be applied to real world situations and they should be able to pass any certification exams that could be offered for those courses as long as they are taken within an acceptable time frame after taking the course (in other words, dont take the course and finish it, then not apply anything you have learned for a year, only to take the test and fail it because you have forgotten everything you have learned).

FAQ #6

Q - How can I register for a course?

A - You must first be a registered user of the main MLUG web site. If you are not a member, you can register for FREE using this link http://www.maysville-linux-users-group.org/modules.php?name=Your_Account&op=new_user Information you provide for this web site will not be sold to any other web site or 3rd parties. Once you have registered and verified your registration through email, you can then log in to the MLUG Distance Learning Center You can then use the exact same username and password that you use for this web site at the top right page link that says login. After you log in to the distance learning web page, you can view the courses and course descriptions. If you find a course you want to take, you can then pm me a message through these forums or send me an email by using the link below any message that I post. You can also go into the members list and use the links there under the username ewiget.

FAQ #7

Q - The main MLUG Distance Learning Center web site looks very basic, why?

A - I want all web pages used to load as quickly as possible, this means reduced eye-candy (images) used for the main introductory pages. The courses have lots of image examples, multimedia files, and are much more visually appealing. Another reason is because the main MLUG Distance Learning Center web page can be crawled by web search engines so that the course content appears within those search engines (only the course titles and descriptions). Not having images on this page reduces the load on the server, which sometimes can have as many as 400+ search engine bots crawling the web site (I have actually seen more on some days).

FAQ #8
Q - How can I help?
A - There are several ways that you can help and participate in the Distance Learning Center. If you are a teacher or instructor, you could help prepare content for the courses, and even offer to teach a course. If you are someone looking for specific training, you can request a course to be added if it is not already present. You can take the courses we have and offer suggestions on how to improve them. You can help support our efforts by telling as many people as you can about this web site and the types of informationor courses we offer. You could also show your support by donating money to help us cover the costs of hosting these web pages and courses (I might add that in the 4 years this web site has been online, with the hundreds of visitors we have received, with all of the help this web site has provided to help people resolve their problems, there has never once been a donation made to this web site. The entire costs of running this web site, including the maintenance of the server, the content that has been added, the domain name registrations for multiple domain names each year, the bandwidth used by this web site, and even printed materials and cds that were provided during meetings has solely been paid out of my own pocket and during my own time (the one exception was the installfest in which either Janet G or the Maysville Community & Technical College provided refreshments.)
