Maysville Linux Users Group (MLUG) - Linux Users Helping Linux Users FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Category: Main -> MLUG Membership

Question
·  How can I join the MLUG
·  Is there a membership fee?
·  Do you have monthly meetings?
·  What are member groups?

Answer
·  How can I join the MLUG

By simply becoming a user of this web site you have become an Active Member! Registration is free for Active Members, participation is optional but encouraged. Active members can participate in the online forums, write articles for the MLUG, ask for assistance and attend MLUG meetings. However, there is one restriction in regards to meetings - an active member can not vote in polls or elections and can not serve as a board member.

If you like what we are doing and want to move up in your membership and provide support for our continued growth, you can become an official premium member. Official premium membership is $40 yearly (only $14.50 goes to the MLUG, the rest pays for merchandise you receive with membership) but comes with many benefits that active members do not receive. Specifically, official members get a 50% discount on all training we offer online, and you automatically get an MLUG t-shirt to wear with pride. Official Members can also write articles for presentation at MLUG meetings, serve as a board member, and vote in board polls.

If an official membership is still not enough, we offer a Lifetime Membership. With the Lifetime Membership, you get an official MLUG t-shirt, plus you get a special MLUG Lifetime Membership Wall Clock, an official MLUG coffee mug, and you get all current and future online training courses for free. Lifetime Membership is a 1-time fee of $500 (your actual LIFETIME membership donates $463.20 to the MLUG, the rest is used to pay for the merchandise you receive with lifetime membership)

·  Is there a membership fee?

We do not currently charge any types of fee's for becoming an Active MLUG member.

However, the maintenance of this web site, domain name registration, web hosting, and refreshments for meetings all costs money....not including costs it takes to have guests speakers and other things we offer members. We pass these fee's on to our members in the form of Optional Memberships.

·  Do you have monthly meetings?

The MLUG does not currently hold monthly meetings but we do hold quarterly meetings. The quarterly meetings are held on the first saturday of March, June, September, and December (weather permitting). Meetings always start at noon and last between 2 - 4 hours or longer. Meetings are always announced on the MLUG forums area, generally always posted on the front page, and announced at http://www.maysvillekybbs.com forums and front page. We also mail the meeting information via our newsletters. The meeting upcoming agenda is always displayed in the meeting announcements.

We also have special meetings on occassion. These meetings are generally the result of a national guest speaker, or a Linux Installfest. These are announced via the same web sites, forums, and newsletters.

·  What are member groups?

Member groups were created in order to give special promotions to paid memberships.

By simply registering on this web site, you automatically become a member of the Active Member group. Active members have access to all parts of the web site and are full members. However, active members pay the full price for distance learning training and active members may not participate in polls or elections that require member votes.

IF you have purchased a paid yearly membership, you then get moved to the Premium Member group. As a premium member, you get the same usage of all the web site features. However, you get distance training at half-price, plus you get a discounted rate on any hardware or software you purchase from our store, and you can participate in polls and elections that require member votes.

The Lifetime Member group is a very special group of persons. Those members see the value of being a member of this web site (some of our members have been with us since day one), they also value the services that we bring to the community, and they want to see us continually grow and expand the the MLUG membership. As such, they have purchased a lifetime membership, showing their commitment to the MLUG and their community. They have pre-invested in free online training for the rest of their lives. They know their money that they spent on a lifetime membership goes right back into making the MLUG a better community of users, linux users helping linux users!
