New for 2006
I have been putting together a wish list for accomplishments that the MLUG should try to make in 2006. Here are a few:
1 - I wish to revive the monthly meetings and InstallFests. There has been a lot of new interest in Linux from the Maysville (and near traveling) communities. We need a place to hold these meetings regularly. If you have any contacts with a business or know of a location that has at least desks/tables, chairs, broadband internet connection, public restrooms....then please contact me via pm to ewiget or by sending email to ewiget <> rhpstudios.com
2 - Pre-recorded broadcasts of the MLUG meetings, archived on the web site.

3 - More member contributions of articles, how-tos, tips, etc.
4 - Roll out new Distance Learning (in the works now)
5 - Membership drive - at one time we had about 70 active members and maybe another 20 part-time members - some of them as far away as Wilmington, Ohio & Lexington, KY. This declined for various reasons, mainly because several new LUGS opened closer to some members homes but I also feel the decline was partially because I stopped having the monthly meetings when RHP Studios offices became too small to accomodate everyone. The college was the ideal place, but that requires someone from the college to also free up their time to sponsor the meetings. See #1 above.
6 - Incorporation as a non-profit entity and appointment of members to positions.
7 - Membership dues - I need to set up some type of membership dues for the simple fact that the MLUG has been a constant drain on the pocket since it first started. Members who have attended meetings know that there was generally always refreshments that were paid for out of my own pocket on all but a single occassion, people who attended meetings generally received print-outs of the presentation and also cdroms containing software or even distributions of Linux that spanned multiple cds, the domain names for the web sites cost about $30 per year, the bandwidth of the web site has grown considerably and I foresee this to grow even more with the Distance Learning Center and If I start hosting live broadcasts of past meetings. Truth be known, I have paid all of this stuff out of my own pocket for the last 10 years simply for the love of Linux....and I want to continue to offer all of these things. A small membership fee will allow these to continue and also grow.
If you have any suggestions of what you would like to see happen with the MLUG in 2006, please post your ideas within the comments on this article.

Part of the reason for tracking new linux distributiosn is that I am going to try to review a new linux distribution each month beginning in February. Basically, what I plan on doing is in early January I am going to pick a Linux distribution I have never used, install it, and use it for 30 days while documenting my experience with installation, configuration, packages, problems, etc. I hope to include screenshots, etc.
For the first review, I am going to tackle Ubuntu - look forward to the article in February. |
