General: Review of Freespire 2.0.6

MLUG Web News

I have started a review of Freespire 2.0.6 in the Reviews section. I have a lot of images to get uploaded and plan on doing that over the next few days. I had originally planned and started a review of Freespire 1.x but felt that it needed to mature a little first. I really liked the concept and idea behind freespire, but just felt it had some issues in the early versions. After using Freespire 2.x for a few days now, I can say those early problems have been fixed.

I will be going back to the "old style / format" of the reviews, where I document everything from installation to daily use of a new distribution for approximately 1 month. I will update the review as often as I can and I generally use a new page for each update to the article. I always document the basic usage, features that make the distribution unique, and any problems I find, along with general likes and dislikes.

Check it out and look forward to other distributions coming soon.

thanks,

ed

Updated 11-15-2007 - There are now 5 pages to this review, of which 3 pages are installation screenshots. I will have more soon!

General: New Mailing List

MLUG Web News

I created a new mailing list using mailman because I didn't like the format of the mailing lists we are currently using. Signing up for the mailing list is optional, however, it is a moderated list so sign up and be assured you won't receive any spam messages except for valid members and the information must pertain to Linux. Existing members have already been subscribed, however, you can unsubscribe when you receive the first notification email if you wish.

The address to sign up is here - http://maysville-linux-users-group.org/mailman/listinfo/announcements_maysville-linux-users-group.org

You can also send an email to announcements-requests at maysville-linux-users-group.org to subscribe. Simply place subscribe in the subject line of the email. You can also unsubscribe using the same email address with unsubscribe in the subject line.

To get help, send an email to the same address after subscribing with the word help in the subject line.

If you want to post a message to the mailing list, send an email to announcements at maysville-linux-users-group.org - Note that since this is a moderated list, expect some delay from the time you send the email until the time it is approved by a moderator and posted to the list.

What will the list be used for? Here are some suggestions:

  • to request help from other members about a specific subject concerning linux (software, hardware, etc)
  • to make announcements to other members about linux conferences, software, hardware, etc
  • to receive information about MLUG meetings and other special events
  • to receive RHP Studios hardware and software specials that are exclusive to MLUG members
  • to receive information about new articles, training programs, and other things happening within the MLUG.

General: Still looking for a meeting room....

MLUG Web Newsewiget writes "

Today, I received many Ubuntu distribution cd-roms in the mail for PC, Mac, and 64 bit systems through the Ubuntu CD LUG requests. This prompted me to try to find a location to have a meeting so I could distribute them to our users.

General: How to write news, articles, or reviews for the MLUG web site

MLUG Web Newsewiget writes "

In this article, I will provide some guidelines for writing an article or review for publication on the MLUG web site. Anytime I mention the word article, it is synonomous with News - they are both the same. Articles can be News, How-to articles, lengthy tips, etc. Reviews can be on anything related to open source, such as books, distributions, hardware, software, etc.

Click below to read this article. This article will also be posted as a Sticky within the Forums section. "

General: New for 2006 - Meeting Hall/Room Needed

MLUG Web NewsNew for 2006
I have been putting together a wish list for accomplishments that the MLUG should try to make in 2006. Here are a few:

1 - I wish to revive the monthly meetings and InstallFests. There has been a lot of new interest in Linux from the Maysville (and near traveling) communities. We need a place to hold these meetings regularly. If you have any contacts with a business or know of a location that has at least desks/tables, chairs, broadband internet connection, public restrooms....then please contact me via pm to ewiget or by sending email to ewiget <> rhpstudios.com
2 - Pre-recorded broadcasts of the MLUG meetings, archived on the web site.

General: Online Training via Distance Learning Software

MLUG Web NewsThe MLUG is about to roll out the first of several online distance learning classrooms. These will be full online classrooms covering various topics. A new poll has been started to find out what our users would like to receive training in. I already have a few ideas from various areas of knowledge, and a few different classes are already in the initial stage of being put together. If you have any other suggestions, chose other in the poll and then post a message concerning the training you would like to receive. If you would like to know more about these online classrooms, click to read more.

Survey
I would consider paying for commercial linux software if it....

was a single-license and cross platform compatible
superior to opensource software features/stability
is the only thing available
included premium support
included lifetime upgrades
were easier to install or use
